14's work hard against tourists

As the end of the season beckons Llantwit major 14’s seem to have saved their best rugby for the fair weather fans. Stepping in to help out Cwmbran RFC who were hosting a sizeable touring contingent from Maidenhead RFC, the AmmoKnights found themselves going head to head with the tourists 2nd XV.  A team that most South Wales clubs would happily call their 1st XV, the strength in depth of the tourists was an impressive sight.

With both teams making it clear from the first whistle that a match of passing endeavour was in order they set about producing a memorable display of running rugby. Maidenhead struck first with a well worked try that saw the ball being offloaded superbly in contact before taking advantage of the overlap to the right to score. Llantwit responded and begun to impose some of their running play on the game. Pressure on the left of the pitch created space out wide and wing Zak Williams had to bustle over to get the AmmoKnights first try. It wasn’t long before Leighton Pawsey stretched their lead with both teams now running the ball from everywhere. Maidenhead then hit back with another well worked try and with both sets of spectators still applauding in awe the referee needed a half time breather.

The next 15 minutes proved a tense affair with both teams looking to stretch the defence but last ditch tackles on both sides kept the scoreboard static. Maidenhead then struck to edge in front with only 8 minutes to go. The AmmoKnights responded almost immediately following a little ill-discipline in the Maidenhead defence allowed a quick tap penalty scrum half Morgan Jenkins muscled his way over to score. Llantwit then stepped up a gear for the last 5 minutes and ran in two more tries. The first was another crash ball extravaganza by Leighton Pawsey before an Ethan white break released Harvey Kwan who accepted the gift of a 5 yard dash to the line.

A hard earned victory and a hugely enjoyable match up with both sets of spectators left breathless. Llantwit head towards the closing stages of the season full of confidence and enjoying a very rare winning streak. Llantwit next host Cymru Caerdydd on Wednesday before a local derby against Old Pens.
