15's spring into life against Bridgend Sports

It’s getting to that time of the season when just like the daffodil’s the AmmoKnights start springing into life. Having endured the gloom and misery of the torrid winter months seeds of hope started to spring in recent weeks. Colourful rugby buds started to blossom with performances of spring vigour against Porthcawl and Skewen meant that Llantwit Major were looking for their third successive win against a Bridgend Sports team also full of confidence. Always a colourful display the fans were treated to 87 points with running rugby to the fore. Despite signs of winter still being present with the heavy pitch, the AmmoKnights endured to be flight footed in attack as they looked to get back to the expansive style from earlier in the season.

The scoring started with an individual score from Ethan White who broke through the Sports defence to make it 7-0. This was soon followed by some good handling that released Will Stewart who still had 50 yards to finish off his first try of the match. Despite appearing heavy footed he managed it easily and more importantly his hair remained in place. Sports then hit back with a powerful try of their own before the team try of the match was scored again by White. Following some good phase play, fly half Ben Reilly cut through the rushing defence before releasing White to finish the move. Llantwit added another try moments later when wing Sam Williams danced through three Sports defenders before sprinting away to give the home side a healthy 28-7 lead. Sports however were there to make up the numbers and dominated the last 9 minutes of possession. Following some good pressure in the Llantwit half their powerful centre burst through several would be tacklers to crash over for Sports second try. That well deserved score for the visitors made the half time score 28-14.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with the home side scoring 2 quick tries before Sports responded with 2 of their own. Firstly Will Stewart scored in the corner after his excellent support play left him with a simple dash to the line. This was quickly followed by a try for Morgan Heselton who grabbed his first after a strong hand off gave him an easy gallop to the opposition try line. Sports then replied with their two tries as they refused to lie down and worked incredibly hard to get back into the game. In fact Sports spent most of the second half pressuring the Llantwit try area and with 8 minutes to go the game was still in the balance as Llantwit led 42-26. All their efforts though took its toll as Llantwit’s fleet footedness fashioned three more tries. Firstly White spotted an welcoming gap in the tiring back line to rush through. Wing Sam Williams then finished off an excellent back line move that was set up by Zak Williams’s hard running and excellent offload. Morgan Heselton then finished off the scoring as Llantwit scored 19 points in the final 5 minutes to give the score line a very flattering appearance.

A big well done to Culley Harrington, Ioan Huntley and Gus Wellard who got their first points of the season in scoring conversions. The AmmoKnights are home again next week as they look forward to another hard affair against St Joes who visit the recreation ground.
