Promising start from the AmmoKnights but Dinas show their class to run out winners.

Following last weekends 10’s extravaganza a beautiful morning on the Dinas Powys common was the scene for the AmmoKnights first foray into the full 15 a side  rugby season. With their local rivals brimming with confidence following their success in the cup competition at the Recreation ground a week earlier there was no doubt who the favourites were for this all Vale affair. Dinas lived up to their favourites tag as within 90 seconds their fly half carved the AmmoKnights defence apart and glided through the butter like tackles to score under the posts. A swift conversion later and Dinas were up and running.  Showing a superior vigour at the breakdown, Dinas soon forced Llantwit into an error in their own 22 that allowed their wing to run in an easy score and within 6 minutes the were 12 points to the good.

Dinas added 2 further tries before Llantwit finally broke their defensive resistance. After some good attacking down the left, the ball was spilled to the Dinas cover defenders. The kick away found Zak Williams who powered through 3 defenders to cross the line and open the AmmoKnights account. Ethan White added the extra points as the half time whistle blew with score looking more respectable at 22-7.  DInas started the second hald re-energised and soon scored 2 more tries to extend their lead to 32-7 and the travelling fans begun to wonder if they would see the 60 minutes. Pete Mitchell begun the scoreboard restoration job when picking up from the base of the scrum he decided to hand off 2 would be tacklers before running the best part of 40 yards to score under the posts. Further tries followed from fly half Ethan White and scrum half Morgan Jenkins and with only minutes to go the score stood at 37-24 to Dinas. As the AmmoKnights tried to run in from the their own 22 a loose pass allowed the Dinas outside half to place a sublime cross kick into the waiting hands of the Dinas player who picked up superbly to score the last try of the match.

A thoroughly entertaining affair and a great start to the season. 12 tries for the spectators to mull over and at 44-24 a scoreline of respectability for the AmmoKnights. Next week will see the 14’s return to the recreation ground to play Whitehead Steelers at home for the first time and they’ll be looking to go one better than the draw they played out last year.
