Llantwit Major RFC U13 Tigers travelled away to Porthcawl RFC for an eagerly anticipated fixture this weekend, determined to put into practice the energy and passion shown in recent training sessions.
A great turn out by everyone meant that all bar one of the squad was available for selection against a developing Porthcawl outfit.
In perfect, bright conditions both teams put on a great show of committed, running rugby for the full 60-minutes.
Honours in the first half went to Llantwit Major who stormed into a lead with tries from Thomas George, captain Carwyn John, a brace from Dan Bartlett and starting things off, on debut, Fred O’Carroll. All were converted by Thomas George who ended the day with a perfect 100% kicking record of 5 from 5.
To their credit, Porthcawl showed superb spirit and fought back brilliantly to win the second half, scoring two hard earned tries. The Tigers only try presented Daniel Bartlett with his hat-trick, following yet another of his now trademark carries. On this occasion the conversion was superbly kicked by Ethan Harding.
The game was a great boost in confidence for the Tigers who have clearly learnt lessons from some tough games. The coaching staff deserve praise for working the team hard in training, but ultimately it was the 19-boys who showed great signs of improvement, rewarding the parents, coaches and importantly themselves, with their first win of the year.
Many thanks go to Porthcawl for their warm hospitality, and good luck to them for the rest of the season. Llantwit Major will look forward to a return fixture in the new year.
