Mini and Junior rugby round up 9th Sept

A busy Sunday for Llantwit Major junior rugby players as most age groups kicked off their seasons with home and away fixtures being played against Cardiff outfit Llanishen. The juniors faced some robust opposition at the Recreation ground with 3 of the 4 junior sides finding the going tough against the visitors with Llanishen proving too strong for the 16’s, 15’s and 13’s.

Starting their final season of junior rugby, the U16’s were already on the back foot starting the match with only 14 fit players. This setback didn’t stop the 16’s scoring first however they soon found it difficult with Llanishen taking control. The second half was played 13 a-side after injuries forced players off and Llanishen run out 57-5 winners. Our Under 15’s suffered an unusually heavy loss going down 58-5 to the visitors.  Better news though as the Under 14’s recorded a good 27-7 victory with some impressive scrummaging as they moved up to full U19 scrummaging laws. Not such good news for the U13’s who lost 63-0. The 13’s squad was hit with a sickness bug over the weekend, however the remaining 14 players gave all their efforts despite the score line.

Away from home it was most certainly Llanishen that had the better of the score lines. The black and bloods U12’s faced a very strong outfit and like the 13’s had the misfortune of being short of numbers. 3 players made their first appearance for the age group and showed a huge amount of character. Llanishen had some powerful runners and Llantwit did well to hold them to a 26-7 half time score line. However, Llanishen utilising their subs proved to be too much for a tiring Llantwit team who eventually lost 63-7. U11’s also found the going tough in Cardiff going down 9 tries to 5. The Under 10’s played an entertaining 9-9 draw with the host team. With both teams getting used to new pathway rules some generous refereeing helped the game flow and provided both teams with an opportunity to enjoy the game. Llantwit Major U9’s played Llanishen in their first full contact match and both teams engaged in a very close and well contested match with Llanishen running out narrow winners 3 tries to 2. Llantwit’s squad performed really well and equipped themselves well to the new dimensions of contact rugby. Llantwit’s Under 8’s and Under 7’s also competed with Llanishen in Tag rugby with the Under 8’s scoring a 14-6 victory. The Under 7’s enjoyed their first ever match for the club and it was great to have such good numbers in the younger age groups.

Next week will see the Recreation Ground teaming with mini rugby talent as we host our annual Sinclair Festival. The festival will see teams from all over South wales compete from Under 7’s to Under 10’s with teams playing under the WRU festival format. The club are also looking for players for all age groups and if you interested then please get in touch with Cilla at ………
