Junior rugby weekly round up 12th September

Our UNDER 14’s headed up over to the east of Cardiff to play Rumney RFC.

With player numbers in both sides low our UNDER 13’s and 12’s combined and made the 1hr long journey up to Ynysowen. The hosts who have also formed a combined age group played out a thrilling encounter with the Llantwit team. Having gone into a 10-0 lead following tries by Dylan Rees and Aaron Moce the home team scored 26 unanswered points to lead 26-10 going into the last 10 minutes.

A sublime solo second try from Aaron Moce was followed up by a first of the game for Tyler Lee. Both tries were dropkicked by Dylan Barlow to make it a 2-point game heading in to the final stages. Both teams had opportunities with Llantwit being thwarted on the Ynysowen line with the last play of the game. Big hand to the four Under 12 players who stepped up in to the game and stood up admirably to the bigger age group. Some strong performances in the boiler house from Declan Lester and Keenan Faulkner and the team now look to future weeks with  hopefully more players coming on board.

Our UNDER 11’s hosted Rumney in their match of the season whilst our UNDER 10’s travelled to Tondu with a big squad of 20+ players.

The UNDER 9’s travelled to Pontyclun in a reverse of the previous weeks fixtures. A great turn out saw

Llantwit being able to field two strong line ups for the games, and they didn’t disappoint. The first match saw Llantwit race off to an early lead crossing for a really well worked set play off the back of a scrum.  Pontyclun came back strongly with 2 well worked tries of their own but stout resistance from the Blood and blacks defence including big tackles from the visiting players saw them stop wave after wave of badgers assault. Not long after it was Llantwit again on the attack who scored 4 more tries but on the stroke of half time a breakaway badgers try made 5-3 at half time. The second half was as exciting as the first with both teams showing attacking endeavour but it was the visitors who run in 3 tries 2 that won the second half. An excellent performance by all the players who all contributed.

With playing numbers so high it was agreed to play a second game and this got off to a similar start as the first with Llantwit looking to run the ball with guile and panache. It was the hosts though who made the better start running in some early tries before Llantwit hit back with 3 of their own. Following a similar pattern to the first game Llantwit finished strong with the players all rotating and adding fresh legs to the proceedings. Llantwit were able to take advantage and hold off a spirited Pontyclun team to score 8 tries to 7.
