Youth team show positives despite defeat

The First XV weren't the only ones in action on the Rec last weekend as the youth team took on Taffs Well on the pitch, which is fondly referred to by older members as the Gwyn Pitch (after Gwyn John the Llantwit football stalwart and now councillor) as it used to host the town’s football matches.

This game was always going to be a close encounter with the reverse fixture ending in a 19-19 draw, and close affair it turned out to be with just five points separating the teams.

The home side going into the break with a slim three point lead from a penalty kick from the boot of outside half Iestyn Jones.

Unfortunately for the hosts Taffs Well struck back in the second half crossing for an unconverted try and managed a penalty kick, the game ending at 3-8.

This was a disappointing loss for the young Llantonians who just lost out to a very good team with all players stepping up to the mark and putting their all into the game.

All players are to be commended for their efforts with man of the match going to James Aaron Archdale who on his debut, and after only two training sessions, put in a fine performance at full back.

Further mention goes to Steffen Godwin whose sniping runs and changes of play had Taffs Well in all sorts of problems, and tight lock Cory Campbell who put in a big shift in defence.
