8s Great out the Gate!

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ was how Keats summed up Autumn but there was nothing ‘mellow’ about a double-header against St Peters and Kenfig Hill, however the matches proved ‘fruitful’ for the visitors and home teams alike.

It was Llanwit Major Under 8s first official home game of the season and nineteen players attended ready to represent their club.  St Peters too brought a full compliment and some good humoured travelling support.   With many veterans of last season in their ranks, Llantwit could boast a wealth of experience bolstered by the enthusiasm and zeal of several new recruits, ready to taste their first game of competitive rugby.

Kenfig Hill were also in attendance with their distinct light and dark blue banded shirts, catching the eye as they warmed up.  Unfortunately they did not enjoy the overabundance of players of Llantwit and St. Peters but a nice compromise was reached, whereby they could play four matches against reduced opposition.

Riley, Mason, Ollie and Monty stepped into the breach and represented the club manfully in these four man games, earning the admiration of the opposition coaches.

That left Llantwit to field a team of eight and seven against St Peters.  Coach Rich took charge of one team, whilst new Coach Mark the other with Coach Gareth fulfilling refereeing duties.

Both sides had new players and so sympathetic refereeing was the order of the day.  The matches were played with tremendous spirit and sportsmanship.  Llantwit’s passing game was starting to come together with players beginning to offload before contact, thus preserving their tags.  The wide pitches meant there was plenty of opportunity for attacking runners such as Emlyn, Iestyn, Tom and the mazy running of Mason.  Passing too was prevalent with Isaac and Logan looking to offload and put runners in space.

To extend the Autumnal metaphor, tagging machines like Oscar, Harri and Tomos were making hay; sometimes reaping two consecutive tags.

St Peters too, came to play and both teams went try for try, until the exhausted referee wheezed through his whistle to signal the end of the games.

Hands were shaken, three cheers rang through the crisp Sunday air and all players decamped to the clubhouse for a well-deserved hotdog and chips.

Coach Rich’s ‘Man of the Match’ was speed-merchant Jasper Porter who covered every blade of grass in a blur of industry and selfless assists.  Coach Mark chose Harri Moult- the Lomu-esqe winger with an eye for a tag and the tryline.

Special mention must go the eight warriors who also attended on Saturday and played back to back games against sixteen Old Pens, as a warm up for the First Fifteen’s Senior Match.  They formed a tunnel to welcome the players and showed support for both teams .

A great start to a season that seems ‘oer-brimmed’ with potential.
