Under 11s finally beat the storms to play some rugby

Having seen more storms than rugby games in 2020 Llantwit’s Major under 11’s were hopeful that Jorge wasn’t going to put another W in the column for Team Storm. With parents eagerly sat clutching their mobile phones on Sunday morning they were overjoyed to hear that the Senghenydd pitch had earned a victory over the heavy rain and the games went ahead. The squad travelled 16 strong for a Gwent round robin with their hosts and Caerleon hoping to catch up for the missed weekends. With the sun shining the first game kicked off with Llantwit taking on the hosts and it wasn’t long before the visitors started to try and entertain the energetic crowd. With the passing looking rusty and passes going to ground Tom Strinati and Liam Davies started adopting a more direct route and it paid off with 2 quick tries. The brace of tries seemed to spark the home to into life and adopting their own direct style of rugby they soon began to bombard the Llantwit line.  The visitors held firm with some resilient defence and frustrated the Senghenydd players with turnovers close to their try line. Llantwit continued to try and throw the ball around with purpose but the final ball just wouldn’t stick. Nonetheless an enjoyable workout for both teams who both teams whom had missed weeks of rugby.

Caerleon were next up for Llantwit and it wasn’t long before the blood & blacks knew they’d be in for a stern test. Unperturbed by the weather Caerleon’s passing was slick and they soon started to find holes in the Llantwit defence. Despite some resilient tackling by some of the Llantwit players the Caerleon play was just too good and they orchestrated the defence into bewilderment. The arrival of the hail shower proved some respite from the Caerleon attacks but unfortunately it soon abated to be replaced by creative movement and attacking play. Llantwit did get a little try line success with some direct running again proving their go to tactic. Both games provided valuable lessons that the team can use moving into the remainder of the season. The team now hope that the number of fixtures played can soon overtake the storm count.
