Llantwit Major Under 14’s made it 3 wins on the trot as they scored 6 tries to snatch a tense encounter with Trebanos. Bolstered by another good turnout the blood and blacks made another 40- mile journey on Sunday morning this time heading west to face a resolute Trebanos side that were left rueing missed chances.
After going behind in the first 30seconds, Llantwit showed a huge amount of character to get back into the game with first half tries from Joel Lougher, Tyler Lee and Dylan Rees keeping them level pegged at half time. Scores from Keenan Faulkner, Harry Fisher and a last-minute score from Tyler Lee finished the game that could have either way right to the end.
The contest started terribly for the visitors as right from the kick off Trebanos ran in under the posts to signal their attacking intent for the day and take a 7-0 lead. The sides then exchanged tries, firstly as Joel Lougher plundered his first try for Llantwit following a strong attacking sequence which saw him power over under the posts. The home side soon hit back to lead 12-7 before Lee scored his first try that was soon followed by an 80m breakaway from Dylan Rees to put the visitors in the 19- 12 in front. Trebanos though hadnt finished for the first half and after more forward pressure soon levelled it up at 17-17.
The second half followed a similar pattern with the teams exchanging a brace of tries each. Llantwit scored first following a good interplay down the left saw the defence under pressure and after a loose defensive kick Harry Fisher was dragged down short. Keenan Faulkner follow up play was top notch however and he snuck over to get the score, whilst appearing to make a double movement in the process. Firtunately for Faulker the refreee's view was obscured by the pile of bodies. It was then the visitors turn to score straight from a kick off with lock Declan Lester making a powerful run before the try and cooly finished by Harry Fisher. Trebanos showed their grit and after dominating possession in the visitors half they finally crashed over to reduce the deficit. With only 3 minutes left he home side got what could have been the crucial score. After a sustained period of pressure, they scored a well worked try to draw level, however with the kick seemingly destined to sail through the posts an unfortunate last moment swerve pushed the ball onto the post to leave the game level.
As Trebanos pushed to get the ball downfield the ball spilled out and full back Bayley Hillberg managed to get the ball into the hands of Lee who crossed the line for the winning score. Not for the first time in the last 6 weeks, Llantwit have been involved in some very close matches and performances have benefitted with the upturn in player numbers that have allowed them to introduce fresh legs at key moments.
With only a few more weeks of rugby left of their Under 14 season expect more close encounters as they head to next week with a home game versus Clwb Rygbi.
