Under 15's battle to victory against stubborn Abercwmboi

Two tries a piece from Dyaln Rees and Tyle Lee helped Llantwit Major Under 15s secure a hard-fought win against a stubborn Abercwmboi side as they held out for 49-35 win at the Recreation Field.

Lee’s brace came in the first half as the home side battled to a 28-21 lead at the break. Rees’s second was the first of 3 quick fire second half tries that put Llantwit 49-21 in front. Abercwmboi however refused to go away and scored two second half tries of their own to keep the margin tight and the last 10 minutes of the match on a knife-edge.  The victory helped the home side secure their third won on the trot as they look to build confidence ahead of a tough Cardiff Rugby Cup match versus Llanishen on the 22nd.

Llantwit had the first score of the day and after some quick ruck play saw Dylan Rees sprint clear of the chasing defenders to give the home side a quick 7-0 lead. It was Abercwmboi who responded better though and after some sustained pressure the visitors got hit with a sucker punch as Lee scored his first try. Picking up from the base of a scrum, Lee seemed to glide through the defence and the home side found themselves 14-0 up after very little territorial pressure.

Abercwmboi hit back with 2 tries of their own as they started to assert some physical dominance over the home side before Keenan Faulkner’s try put the home side ahead. With a gap opening up on the left Faulkner made a break round the defence to score under the posts. Abercwmboi hit back again before being hit straight from the kick off as a lose ball found it’s way to Lee to re-establish the home lead. Llantwit started like a rocket in the second half as firstly Dylan Rees scored his second, before Joel Lougher and Aaron Moce got their first tries of the season. Just as it looked like the floodgates could open Abercwmboi showed some serious resolve to turn their game around and score two more converted tries. With 10 minutes left both teams knew the next score would be crucial but with neither could find the breakthrough and with both teams tiring in the heat the game fizzled out.

A great spectacle for a sunny October afternoon and both teams can look forward to the return match later in the year.
