Fly half Ethan White orchestrated a clinical performance as Llantwit Major bounced back from their week two defeat with a scintillating 44-28 victory over Canton.
In front of a good crowd at the Recreation Field and playing into a difficult wind Llantwit looked to revive their running rugby form which helped get promotion last year last season and soon raced into a 17-0 lead. Corey Hearne got the scoring underway and with winger Sam Alexander seeming to find space at every opportunity the youthful backline took pleasure in feeding him opportunities to breach the visitors defence. Canton, though have a history of devouring Llantwit Major leads and it wasn’t long before they had fought their way back into the game and reduced the deficit to 17-14. Llantwit’s defence held firm for the rest of the half and they extended their half time lead to 20-14 following another penalty from White.
Memories of the Malcolm Thomas semi final would have started to resurface as Canton came out strong in the second half and went into the lead for the first time early into the second half. Major however had different ideas and they were soon in total control and a flurry of second half tris put the game beyond the visitors. Dylan Morgan scored his first senior try along with further tries from Sam Alexander, and Lewis Ingram as Llantwit stretched to 44-21 lead. Canton ended the scoring with their fourth try to claim a bonus point of their own to take back to Cardiff.
An impressive response from Llantwit and with youth rugby products Dylan Morgan and Lewis Morgan making their home league debuts the victory was all the sweeter. Llantwit Major have a week off league action as they host Treharris in the first round of the Division 3 cup next week.
