Llantwit Major 16’s headed to Taffs well on Sunday anticipating another close affair given the recent history between the two teams. However, an explosive six try flurry in the second half helped the visitors to notch up a comfortable 53-5 victory.
Major were quick out of the blocks and dominated the early possession as they probed the home defence. It didn’t take long to find a breach when after some slick handling saw Bayley Hillberg score the first try of the day. It wasn’t long before Declan Lester crashed over for the second try and with Eli Hickman producing some efficient goal kicking Llantwit were 14-0 up.
Roused into action the hosts started to get a better foothold in the game using a deep kicking game to pin Llantwit back in their own half. Despite the heavy conditions Llantwit continued to play expansive rugby and on the 25-minute mark impressive flanker Fraser Mawson dealt the hosts a sucker punch bursting through tackles from 60 meters out and with a subtle sidestep rounded the last defender to score a beauty.
Llantwit found another gear in the second half and run in three quick tries. Ieuan Deere got the first, finishing off a great team move that saw the winger power over from short range. Fraser Nash added to his seasons tally when he burst onto an inside ball by Dylan Rees and Nash glided through the defence to score his 7th try and the season. Despite the 0-36 deficit the home team persevered and deservedly got on the scoreboard when after a spell of forward pressure they crashed over for their only score. Llantwit added two more tries through Tyler Lee and Dylan Rees before finishing the game with a sublime team try that Eli Hickman finished off.
The 16’s seem to be rediscovering their rugby mojo as we head towards the Christmas break but wont be resting on their laurels with two more Sunday’s before a well deserved rest.
