U15's win thriller at Taffs Well

Llantwit Major Under 15s got their first win of the season in the Cardiff Rugby Defender cup with an enthralling comeback at Taffs Well to finish 3rd in the group and end the compeition on a high. After two hard defeats against Dowlais and Llanishen the away team were desperate to get their first win in the competition and knew it’d be tough against a Taffs Well side that won by 3 points in their last encounter.

Unfortunately for Llantwit it was the home side who made the stronger start and kept posession for long periods before going ahead 7-0. Llantwit levelled it up soon after with the now familiar sight of Tyler Lee breaking tackles to score under the posts and level it up.

Taffs Well soon turned the screw and scored two further first half tries as Llantwit tacklers guilty of going to high bounced off would be tackles. With a 19-7 lead a viciforous home crowd sensed a comfortable win and were looking for further tries. Llantwit dominated the later stages of the first half and it was their turn to dominate territory and possession but the home defence thwatred each wave of pressure. Tyler Lee got his second try of the first half following more prolonged possession to reduce the home lead to 19-12 at the half.

The second half produced seven tries as both sides endeavoured to secure the win. A try apiece from Bayley Hillberg and Tyler Lee were matched by the home team as they maintained a seven point advantage. As the clock ticked down Llantwit produced a contender for try of the season as they broke away from the own 22 metre line. Flakner Bayley Hillberg made a sensational break before passing instead to Dylan Rees who managed to outpace the covering tackler to score under the posts. With the scores tied, Llantwit produced the match sucker punch with Tylre Lee breaking down the right wing and as the tacklers came across he fed an inside pass to Rees who scored again to give Llantwit their first lead of the match.

With the seemingly endless clock ticking down Taffs Well mounted multiple attacks and produced a grandstand finish when they crossed with the clock well and truly in the red. With a draw looking likely, the away side were left celebrating as the reliable Taffs Well kicker missed the conversion. A game of high drama and another exhibiton of Llantwit’s fighting spirit as they now look forward to a tough December schedule.
