Under 11 show their character in round robin

Three seasons in one day greeted the spectators of Llantwit Major under 11’s on Sunday as the team made the short journey to Caerua Ely to play a round robin with the hosts, Pontypool Utd and Ynysowen. As kick off time approached that annoying drizzle that gets you wet started and it clearly had a detrimental effect of the Llantwit players as they started their game with their customary sluggishness. A quick brace of tries and Pontypool Utd must have thought they were in for an easy day, but as the sky begun to brighten so did the Llantwit mood and the players started to defend more heartedly. Big runners were now being gobbled and the earlier wafer thin defence showed more resolve. With these efforts came more possession and soon Llantwit’s big runners Tom and Aaron had them in the opposition red-zone. Swift hands and fast feet by Liam released Lewys who run a great support line to score Llantwit’s first try of the day. Pontypool scored two more before the first game came to an end but there was no doubt the second period had been a much more even affair. Buoyed by their performance Llantwit took on their hosts Ely who have been working hard to set up their Under 11’s and battling against low numbers. Ely with some Under 10’s in the ranks couldn’t get any kind of possession as a once timid Llantwit now chased down every Ely player. Capitalising on mistakes Llantwit soon started to run in tries but were also guilty of wasting opportunities as the dreaded white line fever resurfaced. The final contest was a proper slug fest with Ynysowen and Llantwit both throwing everything at each other but neither side could find a way through some desperate defence. As the game dragged on the 0-0 score line started to impact player discipline with both teams guilty of getting carried away. With the draw being the fair result time was blown and a good workout was complete. Most impressive was the change in attitude from Llantwit who despite a slow start worked really hard throughout the remainder of their game time. Great numbers again as the squad continues to grow and with more players to come the signs are looking good for the Under 11’s.
