The Under 16’s started their final junior rugby season with an impressive 66-22 victory against a Kenfig Hill side who had lost some of their players to greener pastures over the summer months. Despite showing signs of rugby rust Llantwit still managed to run in 10 tries as they looked to build some momentum heading into some tough September fixtures. With Llantwit dominating possession in the early stages, the hosts hit them with a classic sucker punch as they broke away from 50 meters to score under the posts and take a 7-0 lead. Llantwit Major then hit back with tries from the centres Liam Davies and Bayley Hillberg to take a 12-7 lead. Some sloppy tackling from Llantwit allowed Kenfig to get back on level terms as a simple lineout move opened a chasm in the visitors defence and it was 12-12. Whilst Llantwit continued to control the possession stats, they struggled to make headway into the stubborn Kenfig defence. The pressure finally told as Llantwit run in the first of four additional first half tries. Fraser Nash got his first try for the club as he supported a break from Hillberg and got an easy finish after being the generous recipient of an offload close to the line. Liam Davies set up Ieaun Deere for the fourth try before Davies got his second of the half to extend the visitors lead to 33-12. Keenan Faulkner finished off the first half scoring taking advantage of some team pressure to crash over from a yard and give Llantwit a 39-12 lead. Kenfig opened the second scoring after a miscued touch finder bounced delightfully into the chasing players hand and he crossed in the corner to narrow the deficit to 39-17. The bounce of the ball soon took its vengeance as Kenfig tried to clear their line with the ball bouncing back to Eli Hickman who had an easy run in and converted his own try. Llantwit added two further tries from Zac Arthur and Tyler Lee to extend their lead to 59-17 before Kenfig got their final try of the match. With seconds remaining Kenfig continued to look to play rugby but a loose pass found Dylan Rees snatch up the bobbling ball and race away to score in the closing moments. A good first outing of the season for the 16s who will face off against a good Builth Wells next Sunday at The Rec.
