14's kick start their new season

Sunday morning rugby is back and our Under 14s made the most of their first outing of the 2022/23 season. After the postponement of the Tylorstown tournament Caerau Ely, Oakdale and Tonyrefail made their way down to the Recreation Field to play a round robin. Playing 3 matches in a morning was always going to be a challenge for the small squad of players but they took to the challenge with vigour and pomp as they blew off their summer cobwebs.

Oakdale were first up and the visitors were fast out of the blocks stretching the home defence with some rapid attacks down the wide channels. After absorbing the visitor’s gusto Llantwit burst into life and started to play some sublime rugby. First up with a breakaway try from Dylan Rees before the team conjured a mercurial a try that was finished off by Lewys Gregson in the corner.  The raucous home applause had as much to do with the Pure bean coffee as it did with the rugby that Llantwit were now playing. Llantwit run in 3 more tries with the most widely celebrated being the first try of his playing career for Sam Fellows.

After a short break Caerau Ely were next up and the home side continued to play with flair and guile which was soon rewarded as another attacking move resulted in Dylan Barlow crossing over. Caerau Ely soon recovered though after a period of sustained possession they scored an excellent try in the corner to bring the scores to 7-5. The home team replied with another try through Tyler lee before Declan Lester added another just after the turnaround. With white line fever taking hold Llantwit relinquished their attacking team play which played into the hands of the defence. However, in the closing stages a hip popping dummy put Harry Fisher into space before he released Dylan Rees for his second try of the day.

With 2 games done an encounter with Tonyrefail was the closing match to the morning festivities and the match didn’t disappoint. Both sides were throwing everything into their last match and it was the visitors who struck first. Llantwit were caught trying to play out of their own 22 and some vigilant Tonyrefail defence resulted in a turnover that they soon exploited with an opening try.  Llantwit then threw everything at the visitors but despite several close attempts they couldn’t break down the Tonyrefail defence and the final score was 0-7.

An excellent mornings work for the players and it was a fantastic start to the season. The squad are currently looking for players for the new season so if you are interested then please get in touch.
