One of many inspirational quotes from Nelson Mandela is: ‘I never lose. I either win or learn.’
That is the mindset required by Llantwit Major RFC U13’s Tigers, following a heavy away loss to the Pumas of Pencoed RFC.
With the exception of a stiff, cold breeze, conditions were perfect for the game on the immaculate Pencoed first team pitch. And it was the home team that took full advantage, with an impressive all-round display, lit up in particular by back Hannah Marshall with some dazzling running. Ultimately, the Pumas proved too strong for the still developing Tigers, but there were, as always, positives to take.
The coaches were happy to see improvement in the backs attack, with Tom Sheldon starting his first game at outside-half linking well with the ever-reliable Tom Lamerton at 12. In the forwards, the hard work put in at training was evident, with set pieces being an area of strength for the Tigers against a formidable opposition. Once again, Dan Bartlett contributed hugely, constantly challenging the home team’s defence with his trademark charges.
Man of the match for the Tigers was Kelyn Joseph, for his 100% commitment in both attack and defence. He also demonstrated great versatility in switching from the forwards to the backs to cover injury, so well done to Kelyn.
Congratulations to the Pencoed Puma’s on their commanding win, and good luck to them for the rest of the season. For Llantwit it’s a case of taking all the positives, and crucially, when not winning to keep on learning.
