Under 10's enjoy successful Holland Tour

Llantwit Major RFC U10s returned home on from their maiden tour on Tuesday having enjoyed a 4 day trip to Holland. After a long journey overnight the team arrived on the Friday and relaxed for the day at Duinrell in Wassenaar before a jam packed 48 hours of rugby.

On Saturday a short trip to RC Haagsche was first up on the rugby menu with 2 teams from the host club and RC Delft awaiting them. Despite undergoing some building work the club house and set up was admired by the travelling supporters who settled into the sun loungers. In some beautiful weather the Llantwit players treated their fans to some of their most entertaining rugby of the season. After quickly adjusting to some of the home rule variations the tourists won their first match impressively running in 8 tries against RC Haagsche A. Buoyed by that first result Llantwit started throwing the ball around and after beating RC Haagsche B they finished the morning with a hard fought victory over RC Delft. After an exchange of presents and lots of photos the tourists left to enjoy the town of Wassenaar.

With 12 teams entered into the U10 festival Sunday’s rugby was always going to be a tough prospect as the top teams from the Netherlands descended on Hilversum. The tourists were boosted before the start of the kick off as they had 2 guest players from RC Eemland decided to be Blood and Blacks for the day. Llantwit progressed easily from the group after victories over Hilversum and RC Tilburg (Walk over) and secured a place in the cup semi-final. There they faced RC Dukes who had already scored 20 tries in their 2 group matches. Competing against a more physical opponent they lost out to eventual winners RC Dukes however the players were determined to finish their day on high in the 3rd/4th place play off against RC Ottignies from Belgium.

In what turned out to be an incredibly physical contest Llantwit started well scoring an early try with Vera Rooters outpacing the defence to score.. Their Belgian opponents fought back hard and it was soon 1-1 after a good break away try. Llantwit held the advantage going into half time when another strong attacking move led to them scoring their second try. Both sets of players threw everything into the game with the hot weather and some determined tackling taking it out of both teams. Llantwit ended the game with the only score of the second half to win 3-1 and the players were delighted with their finish to the tournament. A great experience for the players who showed fantastic character and team work in tough playing conditions.

The team now start planning for next season and future tours with a return to Holland not out of the question. However the current team are looking for new players to join the team. So if you are in school year 5 and are interested then please get in touch with the team manager Jayne Rees.
